Packaging Tips: The Magic of UV Printing

  • source:packaging box manufacturer
  • Time:10/06/2023

In the world of printing, few technologies have captured the imagination quite like UV (Ultraviolet) printing. With its ability to create stunningly vivid and long-lasting prints, UV printing has revolutionized the way we think about printing.

What is UV Printing?

UV printing, also known as digital printing, is a type of printing that uses ultraviolet light to dry or cure ink on a variety of substrates. Unlike traditional offset printing, where the image is transferred from a plate to the paper using ink, UV printing directly applies ink to the substrate. This process results in a much sharper, more detailed, and vibrant print than traditional printing methods.

The beauty of UV printing lies in its versatility. It can be used to print on a wide range of materials, including paper, cardstock, plastic, glass, and even fabrics. This makes it an ideal choice for businesses looking to create high-quality marketing materials, promotional items, and custom packaging.

Three Types of UV Inks

UV ink is the lifeblood of UV printing. There are three main types of UV inks, each with its unique properties and applications.

Offset UV Ink:

Offset UV ink can be used for fine product printing. The characteristic of offset UV ink is that it can achieve instant drying, but the price of offset UV ink is 2-3 times that of ordinary oil-based ink. In addition, special supporting equipment such as ink rollers, cleaning fluids, and printing plates are required. Therefore, the printing cost is higher than ordinary offset printing.

Flexo UV Ink:

Flexo UV ink uses ultraviolet light emitted by a UV lamp to polymerize oligomers and monomers to solidify the ink. It does not contain volatile components, so the ink leaves 100% solid matter on the printed matter and can form a strong ink film. The abrasion resistance, water resistance, and solvent resistance of flexo UV inks are better than other flexo inks.

Screen Printing UV Ink:

Screen printing UV ink has almost no ink solvent volatilization problem, so the thickness of the ink layer remains unchanged after curing, and it is easy to leave a higher ink layer thickness on the printing carrier. Due to the better adhesion performance of UV ink, the color quality of the printed ink layer is also more perfect.

The market price of UV ink is higher than that of ordinary ink, and its printing cost is also higher than that of ordinary ink printing. Therefore, relevant budgets should be made in the early stages of design and production. Secondly, when formulating post-processing strategies, the impact of the particularity of UV inks on the implementation of other process technologies should be fully considered.

What is Spot UV?

Spot UV is a common finish option in custom packaging box. Spot UV is a technique used in UV printing to add a glossy finish to specific areas of a print. This creates a stunning visual effect that is sure to catch the eye of potential customers or clients. Spot UV involves applying a small amount of ink to specific points on a printed piece, and then curing the ink with a specialized UV lamp. The result is a subtle yet eye-catching accent that adds depth and dimension to the overall design.

Spot UV can be used in a variety of ways, depending on the desired effect. For example, it can be used to highlight key information or call-to-action elements, such as price tags or product descriptions. It can also be used to create intricate patterns or designs that draw the viewer's attention to specific parts of the print.
